I just replaced the head gasket on my sunfire, that had been sitting since last summer. When I got finished the idle hunts up and down, I was wondering if my problem was the idle control sensor, the code I got was po507 idle high, and po 480 cooling fan problem which I dont think is related to the Idle problem. I would be greatful for any advice you could give me.

Hi richardchub. Welcome to the forum. This sounds typical of a vacuum leak. The Idle Air Control (IAC) you mentioned isn't a sensor. It is a motor that turns very slowly to different positions and moves a threaded rod to retract a valve to increase air flow around the throttle valve. It is controlled by the Engine Computer.

When the engine is still cold, use a spray bottle to spray water on the intake manifold gasket and vacuum hoses. You should see the water get sucked in and hear the engine slow down when you spray the leak. Also check the fresh air intake tubes for leaks. Any air that gets in without going through the MAF sensor will confuse the Engine Computer.
