Engine Cooling problem
1996 Pontiac Sunfire 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive

My daughters car over heated the other day. I have since added coolant and replaced the thermostat, but the coolant low light is still on in the car and it doesn't seem like the coolent is going into the engine. I ran it for a while until the temperature was above 200 degrees. The thermostat is suppose to open between 180 and 190 degrees. I felt the hose coming out of the engine back to the radiator and it was not hot at all. It doesn't appear that there is a radiator cap, just a cap on the surge tank. I've checked to make sure the water pump was turning and that the bearings were not bad as recommended by the Hayes manual. Not sure what other steps to take. Is there a chart that show the flow of coolant?

Did you follow the proper bleeding procedure for your vehicle?

After the coolant is bled properly, if it continues to over-heat, ensure the cooling fans are coming on. If they are, check for a leaking headgasket via a leakdown test.

OK, i've bleed the cooling system based on the Hayes manual and forums that I have found online. The low coolant light is still on but I know that it is going into the radiator. I ran the car last night, but I don't think the cooling fan is coming on. Is there a way to test that. I could not find in Hayes manual.

Thanks.
