1996 Pontiac Sunfire 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

When starting the car, after putting the key in and turing the ignition switch it takes a while to catch and start. It kind of hesitates to start what could be the problem?

does it hesitate for the starter to engage or does the starter engage and the engine not just fire up?
