i recently bought a really nice looking 1995 pontiac sunfire that starts and idles fine but the engine backfires when you give it gas and you lose power. Can you please tell me where to start looking to fix this car

Do you have a check engine light and when was the last time it was tuned-up?

Check your fuel pressure make sure its within specification/ test the throttle position, intake air temp, manifold absolute pressure sensors.
