How can I tell when the #1 piston is at top dead center or on the compression stroke?

What toe look for under the valve cover to see if the #1 piston is on its compression stroke?

Remove the #1 spark plug, rotate engine (clockwise) with a ratchet on the balancer bolt while you have your finger over the #1 spark plug hole. When you feel air coming out you are approaching TDC #1. Continue to rotate slowly until the balancer mark is aligned with mark on block.

The intake cam lobe will rotate past the lifter on #1 cylinder.
