I have a 94 Sunbird with a 3.1L V6 engine automatic transmission. While driving it earlier this week at around 30-40mph I experienced a engine surge. After the surge, I noticed the car would not shift gears while I was accelerating unless I accelerated to about 3000 rpms and then take my foot off the accelerator. Doing this allowed me to get the car to shift into second gear, but did not work when I needed it to shift into third. While trying to drive the car home, the car no longer shifted gears at all. Any ideas what could be going on or is there a typical problem with the transmission that a car of this age would face.

This isn't typical. Is the trasn fluid full and clean? Has the check engine light come on? When did you last have the trans serviced?

Let me know.
