What to check next

Diagnostic guidance. Suggested checks and possible repairs are separate from the owner's reported results.

Identify the exact engine and diagnostic system, then use a compatible scan tool to retrieve codes. Obtain the engine-specific plug-access procedure, including any required support equipment.

2CarPros editorial correction - October 12, 2026

The earlier scanner recommendation and suggestion to improvise engine movement have been withdrawn pending identification of the exact engine and diagnostic system. Use a scan tool verified to communicate with this 1995 Grand Am; connector appearance alone does not establish compatibility. For rear spark-plug access, follow the engine-specific procedure, including any required support and restraint. Do not loosen mounts or move the engine without the proper procedure and equipment.
