Brakes problem
1965 Other Pontiac Models V8 Automatic 180000 miles

pontiac catalina 65:

after engine start my brake pedal goes too far in before it starts to stop.
with engines turned off the brake pedal feels like normal.
i think my diaphragm check valve may be bad, cause I checked all the other possibilities like Low Brake Fluid Level or Air in the Brake Fluid.

i replaced some parts of the Master Cylinder too, only the check valve is an old one and I can ´t find a new.

do you have any other suggestions, where the problem can be?

I think your going to find brakes out of adjustment, loose wheel bearings or air in the system.

First thx for quick answer!

Air is definitely not in the system, checked it well.

Why do you mean loose wheel bearings, can you precise this?

Thx lot!

If you have a loose wheel bearing and the wheel is rocking it compresses the brake piston thus making you have to pump the pedal. I have seen this a hundred times but not on a 65. Its always been air, is it possible the porportioning valve is stuck?

The whell bearings are not loose,
but last weekend finaly I found the problem, the wheel brake cylinder was broken und filled with brake fluid, so I couldn ´t see any leakage.

Next week I ´ll get new parts, then it should work again.

Thx for your help
