The engine quickly over heated, not gradually. Do you think I am dealing with a thermostat or a water pump?

failing or weak water pumps normally create a very loud noise and also weep coolant from its weep holes. you will need to remove the thermostat and test it to see if its opening properly . did you notice if cooling fan(s) come on?
