Engine Mechanical problem
1967 Pontiac GTO V8 Two Wheel Drive Manual

1967 GTO Just O/H the enging when installisng the cam shaft gear I lined up the timming marks facing each other. Now when I turn the engine over and get number 1 on comp. stroke the timming marks are both at 12 oclock. Then set the dist where it is firing on number 1. But when you go to start it you have to turn the dist clockwise to get it to run it sounds ok but wont idle and when you try to set the timming the closer you get to where the timming should be the slower it runs and quits before you can aline the timming marks. I have doubbled check the timming gear marks. Can th eprobleme be in the dist or the new cam I installed?

the timing marks should face each other. the crank gear should be at 12:00 and the cam gear should be at 6:00. You may have mistakenly put the gears in at what you thought was tdc on #1 but was actually
the exaust stroke. realign the gears again, you'll have to loosen all the pushrods up nd taek te dist out to realign them.....

I did replace the cam and as the first cam I did have the timming marks as you said. And rechecked. You install the gears so the marks face each other that turns out the marks aling facing each other puts the #1 on exhaust strok. And as you crank the enging around the marks aling at 12 oclock. When I put the new cam in the engine started right up and is running good thank you for the input.
