Transmission issues

I have a 97 Pontiac Grand Prix GT, 3.8L with an automatic, 160,000 miles. If I try to accelerate too swifty (like if I'm passing another car), the transmission acts like it's in neutral, and just revs out. This also happens if I'm going uphill, and the car wants to downshift into a lower gear. But, if I accelerate slowly, and feather the pedal, I can get up to highway speed OK. (Just takes a little longer.) This symptom occurs a lot more when the car is cold, and is just starting to move.

Am I looking at replacing the entire transmission, or is there an easier, and less expensive, repair?

This is a Tourque converter problem. It could be your trans fluid is low, but you have probabaly already checked it.
The tourque converter could be going out. But just an observation

Yes, the fluid is at the proper levels. However, I have not gone the route of changing the fluid and filter yet. Would a bad / clogged filter show the same symptoms?

Yes, It is very possible that could cause the same problems. Some car a strong vacuum leak can also cause this problem, but it would usually cause other idling problems.
