2008 Pontiac Grand Prix

I have 2008 grand prix. Metal gas flap at top of filling tube has falling off. Maybe in tank.. Will this cause issues? do i need this flap?

It eventually could get positioned in fill tube so that it prevents fuel from getting into tank, or could get in tank and possibly block fuel pickup (rare occurence).

But I would remove the rubber connection at tank and run a wire (like coat hanger)down tube to see if you can get it out.
