well ahwile back the check engine light came on found out it was something to do with the coolant system so i changed the thermostat and the temp sensor and thought it was still overheating but found out i wasnt letting it get hot enough to kick the fans on so runnig great now but the radiator is really dirty lik mud could that have caused the thermostat or temp sensor to fail?

Sure it could. But not necessarily.

Obviously get the system back to a respectable condition.
Sludge can cause blockage...anywhere in the system. It can plug the t-stat, the heater core, radiator etc. Flush it out good, pull the t-stat, check it. If good put it back and try it.
