2003 Pontiac Grand Prix 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

About a week ago my heater stopped working, it still blows air but it only blows cold air. Also my temperature gauge stopped working at the same time, while I am driving it will go up and down spontaneously. Any ideas?

Maybe faulty thermostat or low coolant

Ive checked the coolant and its fine, so ill check the thermostat
