The car has just recently reached to 130000 miles, and shortly after developed excessive road noise at higher speeds. Can this be the tires or something else I need to worry about?

If you suspect a tire problem (and some tires can be very noisy). Move tires from front to rear, if noise moves with them, then it is a tire problem.
