I have a 1999 Grand Prix Supercharged with 165,000 miles on it, plus have modified it with cold air intake, performance headers, flow master exhaust system, smaller pulley, and reflashed PCM to go with the mods. Well, it started knocking/squeaking and would idel up and down at stops. I didn't drive it but a few blocks when the tapping started. I have had it taken apart by a mechanic and said to be the rod bearings. Does that sound right? Plus, I had been told before on this type of vehicle the motor is not to come out the top. Is that correct also?

Rod bearings would leave metal debris in oil, so get a oil drain plug that is magnetic, when draining oil you will see metal particles on drain plug magnet.
You can also remove oil pan and rotate each cylinder to BDC and grasp rod cap, if ANY movement then rod bearings are bad, and the metal particles have most likely cause other bearing damage or clogged up oil passages.

As far as engine removal, it is generally easier to remove the entire powertrain from under car (including cradle), than remove from above.
