Engine Mechanical problem
1999 Pontiac Grand Prix 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

After sitting overnight our gt won't start. We had to buy a brand new battery thinking the old one was bad, apparently we were wrong. We put the brand new battery in it and after a week the problems started again. My husband goes to start it to go to work and nothing. What can be wrong with our car?

Pick your symptom:And get back with some result.

Cranks but no start condition:

Fuel and Spark:
Get a helper disconnect a sparkplug wire or 2 and ground it to the engine at least 3/16 away from ground -have helper crank engine over-do you have a snapping blue spark? If so-you have a fuel related problem, check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel filter/fuel pump/pressure regulator and listen to the injector/s are they pulsing or hook up a noid light. No snapping blue spark continue to troubleshoot the ignition system-power input to the coil/coil packs, coil's resistances, distributor pick-up coil, ignition control module, cam and crank sensors and computer Note: If it doesn't apply disregard it.

No crank at all/nothing/nada:

Could be the starter, starter relay, clutch switch/park and neutral switch and ignition switch assuming the battery and connections are good.

Is oil level OK?

Remove spark plugs, and see if engine will rotate with starter, if not, try a ratchet and socket on balancer bolt (ign. Off).

If engine will not rotate, then it is most likely a mechancal problem, and engine has siezed.

Could be a broken starter drive, but you want to rotate engine by hand to make sure it is not a bearing in the engine. If it rotates by hand, then remove starter and inspect it and flexplate.

Other Category problem
1999 Pontiac Grand Prix V6 Front Wheel Drive Automatic 160000 miles

it is the coldest its been outside since ive purchased my car (about 5 months ago). It was running complete fine, untill I tried to start it after having it parked and turned off for about 20 minutes. It simply wouldn't start. The radio, heater and everything worked fine but it just wouldnt engage. Someone's dad helped me, and he kept revving the engine untill he heard it "clear up." I then drove about 10 or 15 miles with no problems. When I tried to start it again, it did the same thing but I couldnt get it to start by giving it gas. I bought a bottle of heet to put in since it is extrmely cold here, and I let it set over night. I turned my car on the next day, and let it sit for about 3 minutes. The rpm needle was shaking a little from about 100 to 120 in the idle mode. The car was shaking a little and didn't sound right. Eventually, the check engine light came on and it shut off. It hasnt been able to start since. Please help!

The car cranks but would not start. The fuel gauge registers a full tank of gas but shortly before the car stalled, the gauge was at half-tank. The fuel pump activates, but only if it is jumped. There is power going to the ecm and from the ecm

There is spark and the injectors are giving a pulse, the coils were changed.

P0300 random misfires normally means vacuum leaks and bad fuel

Misfires can be caused by worn or fouled spark plugs, a weak spark (weak coil, bad spark plug wire), loss of compression, vacuum leaks, anything that causes an unusually lean fuel mixture (lean misfire), an EGR valve that is stuck open, dirty fuel injectors, low fuel pressure, or even bad fuel

New fuel pump pressure good, new fuel pump regulator, spark good. Refernce volt good at map sensor. By all accounts vehicle should start. 12 volts at injector when key turned on. Checked injectors before installing this set. Car caught on fire 1 year ago replaced harness and replaced fuse box. Scratching my head over this one.

The basics, if it cranks good but won't start, have a helper crank it while you visually check for spark at the spark plugs, if spark everywhere, use a gage and check proper fuel pressure, you didn't list a pressure spec. Check for fuel injector pulse, that means voltage and ground. If no ground, you need to check rpm signal and possibly your security system.

Check for applicable trouble codes. To check codes yourself, at the least, you need an obd2 code reader.

Placed key in ignition and it will turn only so far but will not start car. When trying to remove key it will turn back only so far and will not release, it stays stuck in ignition and battery power has been turned off for the entire car. This has been going on for the last couple of weeks. In the past I could play the key back and forth and it would work and allow the car to start. Another time I banged on the steering wheel and jarred it and the key would turn to crank car, even slamming the door has produced the key to turn. Now the key is stuck and will not release from ignition. I tried using the spare key in an earlier incident and it had the same results, would not crank car. I suspect the ignition switch has gone bad. Does anyone know of a fix for this problem shot of having switch replaced? This car is not worth sinking a lot of money into due to age and mileage.
