1999 Pontiac Grand Prix Gear release will not activate

I cannot shift out of park after starting my car. I have to shut the engine off, turn the key to accessory and then shift into neutral. This used to happen infrequently, now its the rule rather than the exception. The gear indicator light will not come on when this happens. Appears its an ignition electrical problem
