Running the car out of gas can cause the fuel pump to overheat, as gasoline "cools" the pump.

First step is to measure fuel pressure at fuel rail with a mechanical gauge. There is a "test port" on rail, fuel pressure gauge will connect to (screw into) port. Turn engine to "on" (don't start yet) and puel pressure should be a minimum of 45psi, turn ign. Off and pressure should hold for a minute or so.

Fuel gauge problem is either sender in tank, gauge or an open wire to gauge.
