1997 Pontiac Grand Prix smelling fuel from engine compartme

My check engine light recently came on at the same time I could smell fuel. Autozone said the codes were purge valve\canister related. The gas cap is ok and I can smell gas very strong after I shut the car off. Where is the location of these parts and what should I check first without trial and error replacement?
