1997 Pontiac Grand Prix Replacing struts

1997 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX

I have some telling me to just replace the struts. Some are saying to replace the full assembly. How do I know which way to go?

Replacing as a full assembly is easier to do specially if you do not have the spring compressor to press down spring
easier and safer to do it as an assembly
