My air conditioner was working until one day it just stopped. I had a mechanic inspect it and he said the compressor was making noise, but the problem might simply be low refrigerant, although my gauge said the refrigerant was at 140psi, several times what it should be. I took it to a shop to have the refrigerant drained and refilled, but when adding refrigerant it quickly jumped up to the max psi. Apparently the refrigerant is blocked somewhere in the system. The only services they offered were draining and refilling refrigerant, so they couldn't diagnose the problem. The electronic clutch engages, so the compressor is at least trying to do something, except it does still squeak whenever it's on. Is that where the flow is stopped? Would replacing the compressor fix the problem, or could it be some other part that has failed?
