1993 Pontiac Grand Prix 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

1993 grand prix 3.1 the cooling fans dont come on until the temp is in the red unless the the ac pump runs like in defrost or ac is on.

I would check./change the engine coolant temp sensor, over time it becomes "gummed" up , making it less sensitive to the temeratures. I also suggest changing the thermostat to a 190 degree.
