Please help me! I was driving about 30 mph when my car uncontrollably turned toward the passenger side. I parked and got out. There was dark fluid leaking everywhere. I moved to see if it drove. I got out and looked at the fluid. There was a small gear broken into about 5 parts. I ended up driving it the rest of the way to my house (about a half a mile). I had no problem steering anymore but it didn't sound good. DO you have any idea what this could be?

Hi there,

Do not drive this car again until we know what it is.... now is it red transmission oil? is there any extra steering effort? is there any excessive noise in the transmission? can you see any signs of damage anywhere, can you post a pic of the broken gear?

No, the fluid was not red. It looked like oil. However, when I turned the car on the oil light did not come on. There is no other damage aside from this. It was making a weird noise when i was driving home. It wouldnt let me go faster than 15 mph. It also felt funny when I put the car in park, reverse, or drive. I tried inserting a picture, but it wont upload it to this message.

I know its been a while since the problem started. Ive been busy with school and havent had time to look into anything. Now that its summer, I need to get my car running!!! First of all the car is a 2003, not a 1993. I must have put that in my frantic search to fix it. My mistake and I apologize. Second, there was another piece that broke off under the car. It looks like it was covering the area where the gear came out of. It under the trans and engine of the car. Here is the picture of the broken gear.

Hi there,

This looks like a differential side gear or spider gear, was this on the ground? if so the the diff unit has suffered a major mechanical failure and will be unrepairable, as the case had smashed as well, will do a bit of research and will post again.

Thanks for all your help. Ive been doing my own research as well. I was told if it is a 2 piece diff unit it is easier to be replaced. I cant find any information that will tell me if it is one piece or 2. Yes, the gear was on the ground along with a piece of the casing.

Hi there, can you tell me the body type, LE, SE, ??? and a body code (single letter ) or the full chassis No, or the transmission type which may be on the car I.D. Plate or on a plate on the trans, this will be a huge help.

So I started the car to make sure the battery didn't die, probably the least of my problems, and the car started smoking from the engine. I'm hoping that it is because the oil leaked out from the broken differential?

Lower pic is the diff carrier and the broken gear, top pic is the trans case, if the case is broken, it will be unrepairable. Mark (mhpautos)

Those pictures really help. You guys are awesome! I'll definitely recommend people to this website. I don't understand why it is unrepairable though. Is it because it is a one piece case? I cant buy a new casing for the transmission?

Hi there,

As price of a new case, re building your transmission and the removal & re fit may exceed the price of a re-co transmission, but this is up to you, i would be pricing both before making any decision.
