1991 Pontiac Grand Prix 6 cyl Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 143500 miles

Hello and thanks for taking the time to answer my question. I had a 1991 Pontiac Grand Prix that always drove great for me. Never had any outstanding problems and it purred like a kitten. One day when I was driving in a busy area of town, I was getting ready to make a left hand turn at a light, and as I entered the left hand turn, my car completely turned off on me. I had the radio on and once I heard that turn off I knew something was wrong. So in the middle of the turn, the entire car died and as I tried to hit the brakes, they did not react at all and I slammed right into the back of the car in front of me. Thankfully, it was during a turn into a shopping center, so I was only going like 15 mph.
Once I was helped to the side of the road, I tried my best to start the engine and finally got it to kick over. I was still in the middle of a major parking lot area so I had to get out of the way. I drove to an open parking lot space and while turning into the space my car completely died AGAIN.
My mechanic couldn't figure out what the problem was(as far as why it died) but he did notice that because of the way my steering wheel was when the car died that I needed a complete rack and pinion.
I currently drive another car, but to this day I have a fear of that experience happening to me again, how is it possible that a car COMPLETELY shuts off in every aspect while your in the middle of driving? If that had happened to me on a highway, I probably wouldn't be typing this question right now.
Thanks for any advice and answers.

Cars now days have an amazing amount of wiring and computer controls, sensors and the such. For something to short like that is not unheard of. The manufacturer tries to engineer the vehicles to be reliable and safe, but sometimes things happen, especially after 140k+ at that mileage the ignition switch has had who knows how many cycles, everything that runs the car is working the entire time it is running. Dont live in fear of this happening, it might never happen again. If it does, keep your cool and realize that when engine isnt running, the brakes have no power assist, it takes alot more leg to make it stop.
