Huge clouds of smoke coming from my tailpipe?

I have a 1996 Grand Am with around 206, 000 miles on it, and all of a sudden it has started smoking tremendously, the water temp. Gauge started shooting up, and flashing the check engine light. When I smelled the smoke it smelt like burning oil, I checked the oil level in the car and it was reading full. What it is going on?

What color of smoke was it?
I am guessing white. If so you have cracked a block or the most common reason your head gasket blew out. So unless you over revved your engine or over heated your engine, you could fix this in a few hours.
