I am having the exact same problem with my 2005 Grand Am. I think it may be a short in the wiring system that is connected to the turn signal lever. I am going to try and remove the steering wheel to see if I can look behind it to see if there are any exposed wires that may be causing the smoke. Ill let you know what I find out.

I have looked behind the steering column. I did not see any exposed wires, which makes me think that there may be a short in the wiring harness connected to the turn signal lever. I believe that I have located the problem, and would recommend that it be taken to a dealership or auto maintenance shop to be repaired/taken care of.
