The acceleration seems to be sluggish and I could smell gas fumes coming out of the exhaust. Does this mean that I might have a bad injector or could I have a bad sensor?

welcome to the forum. It could be running rich for some reason. Some of the national brand autostores used to check generic codes for free. If you have access to a fuel pressure gage, you could do some testing.
