2003 Pontiac Grand Am - Sway bar or control arm snapped?

2003 Pontiac Grand Am Front Wheel Drive Automatic

To make a long story short, see the pics:

That's the rear passenger side wheel to give you some perspective.
What is this snapped rod?
I researched online a bit and it looks like a rear control arm or sway bar maybe.
What is it?
I understand it's very important as I can shake the wheel around a lot, it seems that rod mates the wheel with the frame.
We're not driving it around obviously, it certainly isn't safe.

Any idea on how much it would cost to have it replaced?

It's a Lateral link, the sway bar is above it (top) of picture.

You are probably looking at $500-800 for a shop to replace.

that is a lower control arm and anywere from100-250 to replace and u will need a alignment after replacing it.

I would also be concerned about how it broke, that is a pressty good size chunk of steel to be breaking, unless you had an impact?

Yes, it's my mother's car and she wrecked it (not sure on the details).
Went to a mechanic, he said $220 and he'll replace left and right since left was probably damaged as well.

That's a good deal, I would take it. Is it $220 plus parts?
