2002 Pontiac Grand Am O2 sensor was replaced and check engi

The check engine light came on and I replaced the O2 sensor before the cat converter.
Disconnected the neg bat cable before installed.
Drove the vehicle ten miles and the light came on agan.
What am I missing,How can I solve this problem?
