My temperature gauge is not registering at all any suggestions?

I would start by checking the engine coolant temp sensor. That is responsible for the temp gauge.

having a hard time finding a temperature sending unit for my grand am any help?

The sender should be a common off the shelf part for most parts stores. There's nothing unusual about it. Where have you been looking?

autozone and advance auto parts is it called anything other than temperature sending unit?

Try "coolant temp sensor".
