2000 Pontiac Grand Am 6 cyl Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 109000 miles

I saw another person comment on professional mechanic on line. He has a Pontiac Grand am 2003 and he we quoted 450.00 to replace a water pump. I was quoted by Pep Boy 967.00. Why the big difference. What effects and damage will it cause if I delayed getting it fix. (I dont have a thousand dollars or expect it soon).
My car has been a dream but now much older I expect to see more major problems is it worth the investment.

Thank You

Try and get another opinion and a estimate
dont let the car over heat check and add coolant as needed
1000$ is to much
what size engine you have
