2000 Pontiac Grand Am Engine Size unknown Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 120000 miles

Car knocks terribly. One mechanic looked at it and said it needed a new engine and it would cost 1400. Another repair shop didn't see the car but said they had a deal for new engine and transmission and limited warranty for 2400. Does this really sound like the best solution? And if so, what would be a fair price for the engine to be replaced?

The car is actually parked in a family member's driveway right now in another state. It was given to me for free by the owner.I just have to figure out wats wrong with the car. I can't get a second opinion because its a small town and thats the only shop around. The sound is continuous, from the time its started up, until its turned off. Its loud to the point that no one will drive it. I don't know anything about cars, so the only thing I can tell is the noise is coming from under the hood. I'm completely broke right now, so I wouldn't be able to get it fixed anyway, but i'm just looking for solutions for when the time comes. Sorry I can't donate any money at the moment or else I would for any help with this problem.

I cant really help you with the noise, since its hard to be specific, I would love you to have second oppinion but I will tell you

2400 dollars is a very good price for a engine and transmission replacement, if thats parts and labor.
