How do you change the key starter switch? I cannot get the key to turn, therefore I cannot get the car out of park

Removal
Disconnect negative battery cable. Disable air bag system.
Remove steering column.

On Alero & Grand Am with tilt column, disconnect transaxle cable from lower shift cable ball stud on cable shift cam assembly. Remove 3 flathead, 6-lobed socket tap screws (to gain access to lower screw, shift column to Neutral).
Remove linear shift assembly from vehicle.
On all models, drill a 9/32" (10 mm) hole on back of bearing and housing assembly. Using Spring Remover (J-41253), insert tool into hole to engage lock retainer spring, then turn until spring breaks.
Holding column vertical, tap on housing assembly to dislodge lock retainer. Use needle-nose pliers if necessary. Remove lock retainer. Remove lock cylinder. Clean all debris from housing assembly.
Installation
Ensure key lock is in RUN position. With key in lock cylinder, align locking tab with slot in housing and press into position.
On Alero & Grand Am with tilt column, install linear shift assembly. Install 3 flathead, 6-lobed socket screws (linear shift assembly must be out of Park to install lower screw), and tighten screws to specification.
Install transaxle cable to lower shift cable ball stud on cable shift cam assembly.

On all models, to complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
