Engine Mechanical problem

I have a 99 grand am and the fuel gauge is not working properly. It fluctuates continually between empty and full. I know that when I fill up, I have at least 260 miles before I need to fuel up again. However, I have been running out of gas lately before then, and I know there is still gas in the car. Can you tell me what needs to be repaired and/or replaced?
