Transmission howls when in forward gears but operates normally. No noise when in reverse. Could this have anything to do with the VSS?

I would not think it would have anything to do with your VSS. When you hear the noise are you moving or just sitting in drive? If you are driving does the noise increse with speed? Does it make a difference if the car is hot or cold? Have you checked the transmission fluid level?

Transmission starts to howl (deep whine sound) as soon as the car is started. The noise intensifies as speed increases. If the car is in reverse there is no noise what so ever. Fluid level is good. Transmission works great except for the noise.
This car is for my 16 year old daughter and, except for the tranny, it looks and drives excellent, especially for the miles.

Man that is a strange noise.I am tring to think what would be differant from reverse to drive at a stop that would cause the noise but I really can't come up with anything off the top of my head. If it was a pump it would make the noise forward and reverse. The driven and drive gear are not rotating at a stop. The only thing that is turning at a stop is the torque converter and the pump shaft and pump. Are you sure that the noise is coming from the transmission? I wonder if the motor is rocking back when in drive and grounding out somewhere on the frame or something?
