1997 Pontiac Firebird Gear shift stuck!

Off and on for the past couple of months gets stuck in park, but eventually gear shift releases, but not today. Tried every trick to get it into gear, but no luck. Usually a good swift kick will work, but not today.

The shift lock could be bad. There is a way to get it out of park. You need a small straight metal wire. On the top right of the shifter there is a safety release. When you push it down it will bypass the shift lock.
