Engine Performance problem
1994 Pontiac Firebird 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 128k miles

I overfilled my car with oil(due to a leak) and had excessive smoke coming out of the tail pipe. Black soot was coming out of the exhaust due to the excess in oil. At first I didn't know that this was due to an oil overfill, so I let the car sit and turned it on for short drives just to check on it for a span of 2 weeks. Took the car to a shop and they got the oil to the proper level, and the power returned and the car stopped oozing smoke and the power returned.
The issue: Since the incident, my gas mileage has been shot. The excessive oil has ruined my gas mileage to the point where I will burn a half a tank in less than 20 miles. What did the excessive oil destrpu and do to my gas mileage? What can I do do get my mileage back.
