Drive Train Axles Bearings problem
1981 Pontiac Firebird V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

after having the transmission rebuilt by a local very good mechanic for a broken orbital gear and replacing both u-joints my car still has a 1 second delay after you shift from either P or N with a clunk as the rear engages, I have to replace a axel shaft seal so while I have it apart what should I look for to cure this dilemma, the auto parts guy says I need to adjust the pinion, not sure what he means, with shims? The tranny is a 350. Thank you for any help

HI there,

what he is talking about is the pinion back lash, not this is a critical setting if you get it wrong you will destroy the diff, I would get a mechanic to set this up for you.
