Is the transmission shifter accessible without removing the transmission? Can I check the shift forks easily?

You can remove the cables without removing the trans.

There are two cables, shift and select. The cables may be loose, bracket loose/cracked. The shifter bracket in the cabin may be loose, or the clutch arm/slave cylinder may be bad.

Go to fierostore.com for replacement parts.
