By chance is the tensioner a left hand thread on the pully? i broke a tool, so I don't know if it a left hand thread or just really frozen.

the thread on my car, which i am the one who asked the question. is indeed a left hand thread. you screw it in counterclockwise, which allows you to put a wrench on the bolt to move the tensioner back to install the belt. thanks guys but you were wrong in this case. i had to find out the hardway and remove the whole assy. and put it in a vice. then tried it both ways. viola! not lefty loosey,righty tighty.
