I've recently noticed a noise (eminating from the dash area) that sounds similar to a gas powered model airplane engine. I changes pitch with MPH only. I have tried with /without the AC running, at a stop in neutral, reving the engine RPM and listening out the drivers window and passenger window for noise echos from freeway barriers and city street curbs. Not only do I NOT hear any echos, but I don't hear the noise until the speed reaches about 30MPH. Oh, by the way, I don't hear any noise when driving in REVERSE. Could this be a mechanical problem with the speedometer/speedometer cable. Please help. The noise has me baffled and concerned.

Noises can be challenging when they aren't a familiar one.

Things I would do, would be to raise and block the front end so that the speed can be raised without you moving. This will eliminate the speedo cable without having to disconnect it. It also give the opportunity to have the hood open and see if this is from the engine compartment.

I know you said dash area, but.

IF this is the 3800 motor, the power steering reservior is neglected to be checked as it is buried close to the firewall. Maybe a possible cavitation if it is low?

Will the noise change if you vere to the left or right?
