When I press on the brakes I can hear a low rumbling sound from the back, it sounds like an airplane passing overhead. There is also a low whirring sound. Is it the brakes or tires or U-joint or steering or what?

Hi:
If it only happens when the brakes are applied, it sounds like the brake are metal to metal and need replaced. If you have driven like this for an extended period of time you may need to replace the rear drums (or rotrors if you have 4 wheel disc).

Let me know if you have any other questions.
