Would it be correct to say that in the event of high mileage both axles and wheel bearing hubs on both sides need to be refurbished.
two axles and one wheel bearing hub was replaced by the mechanic but the car is not repaired. A bad cv joint is becoming quite an expense.

As long as the CV boot is intact, the CV axle will be OK, they will usually fail when the boots become ripped/torn and water gets into the outer joint washing away the lubricant.

To check this:

Raise car, put on stands. Grasp tire and push/pull both horizontally and vertically, if any movement then possible wheel bearing, ball joint, tie rod, control arm bushing.

Check CV boots for any signs of leakage or cuts/rips in rubber boot.
