Heater problem
1996 Pontiac Bonneville 6 cyl Automatic 112000 miles

my check engine light came and the heater stoped working on so I went to the part store and had them run a test on it and it came back that it might be the thermostat so I changed the thermostat the check engine light turned of but the heater still wasnted working then I noticed the car would start to ge hot and then the heater would kick on for a second and the temature would go back down and withen a few minutes it would go back up again and then the heater would kick back on for a few seconds and again the tempiture would drop now it is to the point where it gets hot enuogh to make the check gages light to come on cuase the the tempture gage is in the red zone but after a minute or two the heater will come back on for a second and the tempature will drop back to normal again so im wondering if you guys might have a answer to this question thankyou verry much

Sounds liek it is low on coolant or has an air pocket in the cooling system. Be sure the radiator is full and the overflow bottle is at the correct level. When filling ccoling system, turn heater to full hot. The gauge moves when coolant hits it, they cannot read air, so that is when the gauge drops, then hot coolant hits it and the gauge goes up
