The smell of gas is there when the car is off or on.
While traveling the smell is behind and thus does not
come iinto the passenger space. When the car is stopped the smell is obvious. Doesn't matter wheather the car is running although it seems to be strongest after a trip.

go under and spray baby powder on fuel lines and gas tank. if it sticks then you have found the leak.
