1986 Pontiac 6000 shifting into any gear

the gear shift lever button has come out of the handle and for awhile i could put the button back in and shift out of park & into gear. now however the button will not push in so i cannot shift gears. what is happening? can it be repaired or can i somehow by pass the need for the button

I think that is repaired as an assembly . YOu'll probably have to go to a junkyard o find one and replace the whole thing.
