1999 Plymouth Voyager When to rebuild transmission

Hi Bob and Ken, My 3.8 Grand Voyager has 256,000 miles on it. It's the original transmission - no major work - new fuel pump. Body and interior are good. It runs great but occaisionally (not often) stumbles upshifting. I'm getting leary of taking my baby on longer trips. I can get the transmission rebuilt for $1600 by a good shop. Is this a good idea? I see the $1600 as less than the sales tax on a new car! Are there other weak spots I should have checked before do something? Thanks Ted

have you had the vehicle test driven by your mechanic? a lot of times a stumbling transmission is misdiagnosed for a ignition problem. just food for thought. also these transmissions have had problems with the final drive gears on the transmission and if you have it rebuilt just to freshen it up, rebuilding it, they just replace what is worn. you could get it back and 3 months from now the final drive could give out because they are not replaced during a rebuild unless they are broken. so in my opinion i would get a second opinion on what is actually wrong before the rebuild. hope this helps. and if you do end up rebuilding it, that is a fair price to pay.
