The rack and pinion assembly has three seals. Leaking power steering fluid is very common. Although replacement is usually easier than on other car brands, this is not a do-it-yourself project.

If you don't believe your mechanic, take it somewhere else for a second opinion. These guys are trained to understand how improper tightening of bolts can lead to objectionable noise, threaded hose fittings can easily get cross-threaded and ruin the housing of the new assembly, and a whole list of other things that can go wrong to cause other problems.

A four-wheel-alignment must be performed after replacement of the assembly.
