My girlfriend has an 98 plymouth grand voyagerwith about 186k on it. I recently replaced the tranny becouse it was giving a little jerk when slowing down and sometimes it felt like it sliped and then catches gear with a slight bang with it. I now noticed that when slowing down into a stop without rushing it stops ok, but when coming into a stop with somewhat rushing the engine idle drops to about 800 then it rises to about 1200 rpms then it drops rapidly making the tranny to bang as it dowshifts to 1st gear. What can this couse this?

This is called "bump shift" and results from the transmission computer waiting too long to shift to first gear when coming to a stop. It's the "nature of the beast". My '93 Dynasty has done the same thing since new.

There is a list of about a dozen common driveability irritations that can be addressed by reflashing the transmission computer, but in my case, it didn't make any difference. Some of these things will update automatically as you drive the vehicle and the computer learns the characteristics of the clutch pack wear and your driving style.
